On March 11, 2026, the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, hosted WISe – WorkIn’ Science, the seventh Career Day, which brought together more than 30 companies and institutions from the fields of science, technology, and environmental protection. Once again, the event confirmed its importance as a platform for connecting students with potential employers and for exchanging knowledge between the academic and professional sectors.

Among the participants was Josip Juraj Strossmayer Water Institute, which presented its activities to students, with a particular focus on its role in the water monitoring system in the Republic of Croatia, as well as opportunities for professional development and employment.

At the Institute’s exhibition stand, visitors had the opportunity to explore examples of work in the field of water quality monitoring. A stereomicroscope demonstration attracted particular interest, allowing students to observe macrozoobenthos and understand its role as a biological indicator of the ecological status of water bodies, in accordance with European legislation and the Water Framework Directive.

Representatives of the Institute engaged with students on opportunities for internships, involvement in field and laboratory work, and career prospects in the field of water and environmental protection, with an emphasis on the interdisciplinary nature of the profession.

As part of the event, a roundtable organized by the Department of Biology was also held, presenting professional development pathways within the field. Through open discussion, students were introduced to the challenges and advantages of careers in biology and environmental protection.

The Institute’s participation in such events highlights the importance of cooperation with the academic community and investment in the development of young professionals.
