HAZU Recognizes the Institute for Water “Josip Juraj Strossmayer” as a Key Institution in Water Protection

In its statement on 29th of January 2025, the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (CASA) recognized the “Josip Juraj Strossmayer” Water Institute as a key scientific and professional institution for improving efficiency in the field of water and ecosystem conservation. In view of the recently adopted EU Action Plan for the implementation of the European Green Deal, the demand for sustainable use of natural resources resulting from the conservation and restoration of biodiversity and the reduction of pollution, especially of water ecosystems, is defined.

In its statement dated January 29, 2025, the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU) recognized the Institute for Water “Josip Juraj Strossmayer” as a key institution in the scientific and professional domain for improving the efficiency of water and ecosystem protection.

Taking into account the recently adopted European Union Action Plan for implementing the European Green Deal, the need for the effective utilization of natural resources has been defined, stemming from the protection and restoration of biodiversity and the reduction of environmental pollution, particularly of water and aquatic ecosystems.

The next steps that the Republic of Croatia must take involve reducing the impact of water pollution from various sources and alleviating pressures on water resources to prevent their excessive use. This will be achieved through modern methods for monitoring the chemical status of surface and groundwater. Therefore, measures and activities have been proposed to enhance the efficiency of water and ecosystem protection, as well as to safeguard human health from risks associated with the adverse effects of environmental pollutants. These measures primarily focus on applying an integrated approach to wastewater management within river basins, managing sludge from wastewater treatment plants, preventing water pollution, and developing public drainage systems.

The Institute for Water “Josip Juraj Strossmayer” systematically monitors the concentrations of nutrients, persistent organic pollutants, pharmaceutical compounds, and other industrial by-products to mitigate their impact on river basins, thereby establishing the prerequisites for effective water resource management. Considering the aforementioned water protection measures and the scope of its activities, the Institute has also been recognized as a key institution in developing scientific and technical foundations for the water management sector by networking relevant scientific and professional capacities within Croatia.
