The Institute carries out national monitoring of the status of surface water and groundwater, while the monitoring of water intended for human consumption is regulated under a separate framework. The first measure under the expanded activities involved additional sampling of surface waters, while further activities will be planned in accordance with monitoring results and new relevant data provided by the competent authorities.

Sampling was carried out on 11 August 2026 at four locations: Lika, Bilaj; Lika, Ostrvica Bridge; Lika, Budak; and Brlog Reservoir, Gusić Polje.

PFOS (perfluorooctanesulfonic acid and its derivatives), antimony, arsenic, cadmium, copper, lead, zinc, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were analysed in the collected samples.

Within the framework of surface water monitoring, an environmental quality standard has been established for PFOS and its derivatives among PFAS compounds; therefore, PFOS was included in this testing.

At all sampled locations, PFOS concentrations were below the limit of quantification of the analytical method applied (< 0.00065 µg/L).

For the parameters for which the Regulation on Water Quality Standards establishes applicable surface water quality standards, the results obtained do not indicate any exceedance of the prescribed values.
