On the occasion of World Water Day, construction works began on the development of the Drava River riverbank in Osijek, further highlighting the importance of investment in water management, flood protection, and the sustainable management of water resources.

Minister of Environment and Green Transition Marija Vučković attended the ceremony marking the start of works on the construction of a riverbank embankment and the extension of the riverside promenade along the Drava River in the Neptun section. On this occasion, she emphasized that projects such as this are essential for public safety, but also for the long-term development of urban areas in harmony with nature.

The project, extending over 442 meters and valued at EUR 8.3 million, is jointly financed by the City of Osijek and Croatian Waters. In addition to the construction of the embankment, the project includes the development of pedestrian and cycling paths, installation of public lighting, and landscaping of the surrounding area.

The project represents an important step in strengthening the flood protection system, while also continuing the development of the Osijek promenade, further connecting the city with the Drava River and improving the quality of life for its residents. Completion of the works is expected within two years.

Scientific and professional support also plays an important role in the implementation of such projects, with the Josip Juraj Strossmayer Water Institute contributing through the preparation of expert documentation for sustainable water management. Representatives of the Institute also attended the event, further emphasizing the importance of cooperation between the professional sector, science, and public institutions in the implementation of such infrastructure projects.
