As part of the environmental initiative “Eco Patrol Brijuni 2026”, Croatian and Slovenian divers jointly carried out an underwater cleanup operation in the waters surrounding the Brijuni Islands archipelago, removing bulky waste, plastic, glass, and tires from the sea with the aim of preserving marine ecosystems and raising awareness about the importance of protecting the sea and the environment.

The initiative was organized by the Diving Club HRVI Nemo-Adriatic in cooperation with Brijuni National Park Public Institution, with the support of Plava promocija and under the patronage of the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund and the Josip Juraj Strossmayer Water Institute.

In addition to members of the HRVI Nemo-Adriatic Diving Club from Croatia and Slovenia, the initiative also involved divers from the Diving Club AdriatiCro Zagreb and the Jastrebarsko Volunteer Fire Department.

Alongside the underwater cleanup activities, participants carried out mapping and monitoring of locations, as well as educational activities focused on the importance of protecting the sea, the environment, and nature. Particular emphasis was placed on the issue of waste entering the sea from land, which represents a long-term pressure on marine habitats, biodiversity, and the quality of coastal areas.

Through its activities, the Josip Juraj Strossmayer Water Institute continuously supports initiatives aimed at protecting waters, seas, and aquatic ecosystems, while also strengthening awareness of the importance of sustainable environmental management and the preservation of Croatia’s natural resources.
